T-Bones make debut in KC to sellout crowd
Duluth News Tribune, MN - Jun 6, 2003
"Every one of the 4,500 seats at the brand new CommunityAmerica Ballpark was filled and many more fans spread out blankets on the grassy knoll in the picnic area behind right field. But the 7,014 officially in attendance left disappointed, as the Sioux City Explorers beat the new hometown club 1-0.

Casey Baker drove in the winnng run in the fifth after a two-base throwing error by T-Bones third baseman Jeff Brooks.

As the T-Bones prepared to meet the Explorers, cheerleaders danced atop the dugouts and skydivers came tumbling out of the white, fleecy crowds above this once-depressed but now-vibrant corner of Wyandotte County."

WHB 810 AM will be broadcasting today's game live tonight so go ahead and bring your radio with you to the CAB. Now that the T-Bones are home, I'm hoping we'll see a few more game stories online at the Kansas City Star. For Sioux City coverage, check the Sioux City Journal, the Explorers' web site and their internet radio broadcast.

Sioux City Report
Kansas City Kansan

Perhaps the most exciting feature of CommunityAmerica Ballpark is the $1,000,000 Bullseye sign beyond the left field fence. Everyone will be taking aim at the huge likeness of Sizzle, the T-Bones mascot, as someone will win one million dollars if any player hits a home run through the bullseye (which is, literally, the bull's eye). The batter will get a T-shirt that says, "I won someone a million dollars and all I got was this lousy T-shirt."

Sevier Loses First Game of the Season
T-Bones Press Release - Jun 5, 2003

T-Bones set to play home opener
Kansas City Star - Jun 6, 2003
"The T-Bones range in age from 23 to 32 and, on average, are about 26 years old. As for their careers, almost all of them never got a sniff of major-league baseball. The exception: Pitcher Wascar Serrano saw action in 20 games just two years ago for the San Diego Padres. Others have come oh-so close. Like infielder Jack Jones, who advanced to Class AAA for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Taber Maier got that far in the St. Louis Cardinals' organization. But that's about it. Most of the other players on the T-Bones' 22-man roster spent last year playing independent-league ball. Now, they're earning anywhere from $750 to $3,000 per month for a team that has a $90,000 salary cap.

Many players have no choice but to spend the off-season supplementing their incomes. Catcher Chad Shindle works in real estate. Outfielder Chris LePine is a physical therapist. Maier, an infielder, is a model and has been in Budweiser commercials. 'I made more doing that than I did for the whole baseball season last year,' Maier said. 'But I still take pride in my performance. You play well enough to see if you can get another chance. That's what motivates you.' "

"J.J. Cooper, news editor of Baseball America, said the Northern League and independent leagues have their moments. 'In some ways, it's better than (Class AA) in consistency of play,' he said. 'At the same time, you're not going to see jaw-dropping plays as much or guys that are going to be stars because those guys already are in the system of big-league teams.' "

"Even the Royals will be pulling for the T-Bones. 'The more baseball that is being played, the more healthy the game is going to be,' Royals general manager Allard Baird said. 'It's all very helpful to our American pastime.' "

T-Bones Baseball An inside look at your hometown team
Bonner Springs Chieftain - Jun 4, 2003
"One area business has even gotten into the swing of things by trying to capitalize on T-Bones fever. Mac's Speedway Grill, 11635 Kaw Drive, is extending a home game-day special to all area residents, regardless if they make it to the ballpark. Restaurant patrons will be invited to take $1 off of the cost of Mac's 14 oz. T-bone steak for each run the baseball club scores, up to five runs, Trent Miller said."

Looking for a Northern League angle on the Sammy Sosa story? Look no further than here, here, here and here.

I just received an email from Northern League Commissioner Mike Stone stating that the May 27th game between the T-Bones and Joliet JackHammers will not be replayed and has been officially recorded as a complete game. The T-Bones had previously issued a press release on May 30th stating that the game "will be rescheduled due to the fact that T-Bones third baseman Jeff Brooks was hit by a car on the field."

Saltdogs Beat T-Bones 7-3
Saltdogs Newsletter - Jun 2, 2003
"The Lincoln Saltdogs got their 7-game homestand off to a good start
with a 7-2 victory over the Kansas City T-Bones in front of 3440
fans at Haymarket Park Monday night. The Saltdogs received a complete
game victory from Mike Zipser, who allowed just 3 hits and 2
unearned runs.

Kansas City got a run off Lincoln in the 1st inning, using a
single, a stolen base and error to go up 1-0. That would be the only time
Lincoln would trail, due to Lincoln’s big bottom of the 1st frame
off T-Bones starter Wascar Serrano. The Lincoln half of the inning
saw 6 singles and 2 T-Bones errors total 6 in the run column for
Lincoln.

That output would be more than enough for Zipser, who gave up just
one more unearned run to the T-Bones in the 4th inning. Zipser got
12 consecutive T-Bones batters out from the 5th-9th innings, and
lowered his ERA in the contest from from 12.71 entering the contest
to a more respectable 4.91 following it.

Dwight Edge led the Saltdogs hitting attack with 3 hits, while
Bryan Warner, Josh Patton and Paul Powell added 2 apiece. No T-Bones
batter had more than 1 hit.

Zipser’s record evens at 1-1 on the year; Serrano’s falls to 0-2.
Lincoln improves to 3-7 after getting their first victory in a
series opener in 2003. Kansas City drops to 4-5 on the year.

The club’s will be back in action at 7:05 PM Tuesday night at
Haymarket Park. Tony Bacci (0-1) is scheduled to start for the T-Bones;
Doug Johnston (0-2) is the expected starter for Lincoln."

Tonight's game against the Lincoln Saltdogs will be preempted again on WHB for a hockey game. The tape-delayed broadcast will begin around 10:00 PM. You're supposed to be able to listen to the Saltdogs broadcast over the internet at KFOR 1240 AM, but for the life of me I can't figure out how. For post-game reports, check the Saltdogs' website and the Lincoln Journal Star.

New Village West ballpark to open June 6
Wyandotte West - May 29, 2003
"Unlike most ballparks, the T-Bones and visiting teams will not enter the field from under the grandstand. Instead, the clubhouse is behind the outfield. Adam said moving the clubhouse allows the fans to sit as close as possible to the field. 'It’s almost scary on the first level— how close you are to the field,' [T-Bones General Manager Adam Ehlert] said."

The T-Bones have a big, pull-out advertising section in the Kansas City Star today.
